The Roadmap Wasn't the Destination

""In the end, the real deliverable was the mindfulness we cultivated along the way.""

As I sat in silent contemplation this morning, sipping my hand-pressed organic fair trade coffee, a profound realization washed over me like a cleansing wave of product insights.

The roadmap, dear friends, was never meant to be our ultimate deliverable. No, it was merely a vessel, a humble raft upon which we embarked on this sacred journey of product discovery and user enlightenment.

For you see, a roadmap is but a map, not the terrain itself. It guides us towards value, but it is not the value incarnate. The true treasure lies in the journey, in the stories we weave, the connections we forge, and the learnings we harvest along the way.

I remember a time, not long ago, when I found myself lost in the wilderness of competing priorities and stakeholder desires. The siren song of feature bloat tempted me at every turn. But in a moment of vulnerability, I turned inward and asked myself: "Am I shipping mindfully?"

The answer, as uncomfortable as it was profound, was no. I had strayed from the path of true user-centricity. I had forgotten that every epic, every story, every acceptance criteria is a love letter to our users, a promise to co-create meaning and value in their lives.

So I sat with the backlog in silence, listening deeply to the whispers of user pain points and unmet needs. And slowly, gently, the roadmap began to re-write itself, not as a rigid plan, but as a fluid dance of discovery and delivery.

In the end, the real deliverable was not the features we shipped, but the mindfulness we cultivated, the empathy we embodied, and the lives we touched along the way. The roadmap was simply the invitation to begin this heroic quest.

So let us not cling too tightly to our roadmaps, dear friends. Let us instead embrace the unfolding mystery of product development with open hearts and curious minds. Let us ship not just software, but love, compassion, and understanding.

For in the end, the real product was the learnings, the growth, and the shared humanity we experienced on this winding path.

Grateful for the journey. 🙏✨

The roadmap is not the territory. 10 years of shipping products that changed how we think about shipping products. Currently contemplating the backlog.
