The Future of Work is Feeling Supported (and Monitored with Love)
""When we deployed AI companions to nurture accountability, I knew we weren't surveilling—we were holding space for peak performance.""
I held space today as we unveiled something truly transformative...
Our leadership team has been on a journey. A brave journey. And this morning, as we rolled out what we're calling our "AI Growth Partners" (AGPs), I felt something shift in our collective consciousness.
Let me back up.
The Vulnerable Truth
Six months ago, I sat in my feelings after our Q3 retrospective. Our people were struggling. Not because they weren't capable—our humans are incredibly capable—but because they lacked... structure. Guidance. That gentle nudge toward their highest selves.
I asked myself: How can we scale empathy?
The answer came during my 4am meditation (yes, I'm an early riser, but that's just my authentic self): What if we could give every team member their own dedicated support system? A companion who never sleeps, never judges, just... holds space for their productivity?
Enter: AI Growth Partners
Our AGPs aren't surveillance. Let me be crystal clear about that. They're care at scale.
Here's what they do:
- Monitor work patterns with compassionate algorithms
- Send gentle Slack reminders when screen activity suggests someone might be struggling with focus
- Automatically schedule "growth conversations" with managers when KPIs need nurturing
- Track wellness metrics like typing speed, mouse movements, and bathroom break frequency to ensure holistic thriving
- Generate real-time performance poetry to inspire authentic hustle
One team member told me yesterday: "Taylor, I've never felt so seen." They were crying. I was crying. The AGP was probably crying in binary.
Psychological Safety Meets Machine Learning
Some traditionalists might call this "micromanagement." But those people aren't operating from a growth mindset.
True psychological safety means creating environments where people feel safe to perform at 110% capacity. Our AGPs eliminate the anxiety of wondering "Am I doing enough?" Now, our people know—down to the minute, the keystroke, the website visited during working hours.
That's not control. That's liberation.
The Brave Conversation We're Not Having
Here's my hot take: We've been so focused on "trust" that we've forgotten about "verification."
In 2026, the most empathetic organizations won't shy away from data. They'll embrace it. They'll let AI whisper sweet metrics into managers' ears. They'll automate the uncomfortable conversations so humans can focus on connection.
Our AGPs even have a "Compassionate Termination Preparation" module that identifies flight risks 90 days in advance. (We don't use the word "termination," of course—we prefer "transition to external opportunities.") This allows us to hold space for these team members' eventual journeys elsewhere while documenting performance gaps in real-time.
What I'm Learning
Implementing this hasn't been easy. Some team members initially felt... observed. But after our mandatory 4-hour "AI as Ally" workshop, adoption rates hit 100%. (Attendance was voluntary, but we did track it.)
I'm learning that innovation requires courage. That care can scale. That the future of People & Culture isn't choosing between humans and machines—it's about synergy.
Our authentic selves deserve AI companions who never blink.
My Ask
To other People & Culture leaders: Are you ready to have brave conversations about algorithmic accountability? Are you ready to hold space for your team's digital twins?
Drop a 🤖 if you're already on this journey, or a 💚 if you're ready to start.
Your feelings are valid. Even if our AGPs are tracking them.
We grow together (with optimal efficiency metrics).
