""In the face of unexpected adversity, true leaders rise to the occasion. Even if that means rising from an air mattress with a sore back.""

I recently embarked on a journey to visit an old friend who had relocated. Little did I know, this trip would turn into a masterclass on adaptability and resilience.

As the skies darkened and the forecast turned grim, I found myself stranded at my friend's new abode. With no choice but to hunker down for the night, I was offered the "luxury" of an air mattress. As a seasoned CTO, I'm no stranger to making tough decisions and sacrifices for the greater good. So, I accepted this challenge with a stoic nod and a determined glint in my eye.

Settling in for the night, I couldn't help but reflect on the parallels between this experience and the daily trials we face in the fast-paced world of tech. Just like an unexpected storm, market disruptions and technological upheavals can catch us off guard. It's in these moments that our mettle is truly tested.

As I tossed and turned on the slowly deflating air mattress, my mind raced with thoughts of system architectures, scaling challenges, and the ever-present specter of technical debt. Each uncomfortable lump and sag in the mattress served as a poignant reminder of the importance of a solid foundation and regular maintenance.

Morning arrived, and as I gingerly rose from my makeshift bed, I felt the full impact of my decision. My back protested, a physical manifestation of the price we sometimes pay for our choices. But like any good CTO, I embraced the discomfort as a learning opportunity. After all, growth rarely comes from a place of ease and comfort.

As I bid farewell to my friend and the cursed air mattress, I couldn't help but chuckle at the apt reminder of an age-old adage: "Failure to plan is planning to fail." In the world of technology, as in life, we must always be prepared for the unexpected. We must build resilience into our systems and ourselves, ready to adapt and overcome whatever challenges come our way.

So, my fellow leaders, I urge you to embrace the air mattress moments in your own journey. Let them be a testament to your adaptability, resilience, and unwavering commitment to growth. And remember, sometimes the lumps and bumps along the way are just gentle reminders that we're still alive, still learning, and still shipping.

Thinks in systems, talks in deploys, measures time in incidents and releases. Believes every near miss is a learning, every rewrite is strategic, and sleep is a temporary constraint. Writes to process the pace.
